AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager: Organise Drawing Sets

A typical fit-out or marble package can easily reach fifty sheets. Keeping drawing numbers, titles, revision dates and the drawing register in sync by hand is slow and risky. AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager treats the whole package as one organised set, fills title blocks automatically and publishes everything to PDF in one step.

What Sheet Set Manager Does

A sheet set is stored in a DST file that points to layouts inside your DWG files. From one palette you can:

  • Open any sheet with a double-click.
  • Rename and renumber sheets with title blocks updating automatically.
  • Store project-level information such as client, project name and location once.
  • Create a sheet list table for the cover sheet.
  • Publish the whole set or selected subsets.

Open the palette with SHEETSET or Ctrl+4.

Step 1: Prepare a Title Block With Fields

Your title block should use fields rather than static text. Insert fields such as SheetSet.ProjectName, CurrentSheetNumber, CurrentSheetTitle and CurrentSheetRevisionDate. Custom properties can be added for client name, consultant and revision. Save the title block inside a template layout.

Step 2: Create the Sheet Set

  1. Run New Sheet Set and choose Existing Drawings or An Example Sheet Set.
  2. Name it after the project and choose where the DST file is saved, normally the project root.
  3. Set the template for new sheets in the sheet set properties.
  4. Add custom properties, for example Client, Consultant and Project Number.

Step 3: Create Subsets

Subsets group sheets by discipline or stage, such as General, Floor Layouts, Wall Elevations, Details and Schedules. Each subset can create new sheets in its own folder with its own template, which keeps file storage tidy.

Step 4: Add and Number Sheets

Right-click a subset and choose New Sheet. Enter the number and title, for example MS-301 and Lobby Feature Wall Elevation. AutoCAD creates a DWG with the layout based on your template, and the title block fills in automatically. To bring in existing layouts, use Import Layout as Sheet.

Step 5: Place Views

The Model Views tab lists resource drawings and their named views. Drag a named view onto a sheet and choose the scale. If you use view labels and callout blocks, AutoCAD fills in the view number and sheet reference, so callouts always point to the correct detail.

Create a Drawing Register

On the cover sheet, right-click the sheet set name and choose Insert Sheet List Table. Choose the columns you need, such as number, title and revision. When sheets are added or renamed, update the table with a right-click. This removes one of the most common errors in submissions: a register that does not match the sheets.

Publish in One Step

Right-click the set or a subset and choose Publish to PDF. Use a page setup override if you want every sheet printed with the same settings. For transmittals, use eTransmit from the sheet set to package DWGs, xrefs, fonts and plot styles together.

Tips for Small Teams

  • Store the DST file on a shared drive and open it from the same path on every computer.
  • Only one person should edit sheet set properties at a time.
  • Lock sheet numbering rules at the start of the project.
  • Keep one layout per DWG for large projects; it reduces file locking when several people work at once.

Limitations to Know

Sheet Set Manager works best with consistent templates and folder structures. Moving files outside AutoCAD can break links, so rename and move sheets from within the palette. Recent AutoCAD versions have also introduced cloud-based sheet set options; check Autodesk documentation for your version.

Once your first sheet set is configured, the next project takes minutes to start and every title block stays correct from the first issue to the last revision.

A Quick Starter Plan

For your next project, try a small pilot: one subset for general sheets, one for layouts and one for details. Set up four or five custom properties, build the title block with fields and publish a test PDF. Once the team sees title blocks and the register updating themselves, adoption usually follows naturally. Document the setup in a short guide so the next project can copy the DST structure and template in minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sheet Set Manager available in AutoCAD LT?

Sheet Set Manager has been added to recent AutoCAD LT versions. Check the feature comparison on the Autodesk website for your release.

Can I add existing drawings to a sheet set?

Yes. Use Import Layout as Sheet to add layouts from existing DWG files to any subset.

Why are my title block fields showing ####?

The field cannot find its value, usually because the drawing was opened outside the sheet set. Open it from the Sheet Set Manager and regenerate.
