3ds Max 2010 Quicktip: UI Colour

Do you change 3ds Max's UI colour scheme?
I will always recommend swopping to the 'Dark' colour scheme when using 3ds Max. This allows the artist to benefit from an interface that does not distract from the main task of working with colours in the materials or lighting setup. This also brings the added benefit of less eye-strain when working with 3ds Max for long periods of time.
Below is the light gray scheme that was the standard UI for 3ds Max, and remains the ‘Design’ versions standard.
Many applications will ship with a similar darker interface, but 3ds Max brings the added benefit of allowing you to change any aspect of the colour scheme you wish to improve to your specific needs. If you've ever been lucky enough to work with film colour grader, you will have seen that they generally sit in a room (mostly with no windows) that has the walls painted in the same 50% gray paint. This is for the very same reason we have discussed above, to form accurate perceptions of the colour they are working with and reduce fatigue. This 50% gray is often referred to as Neutral gray.
The process to do this is very simple.
1. Navigate to Customize > Custom UI Default Switcher (main menu bar shown below)
2. This option will then open the below floating dialogue box. From here, choose the ‘ame-dark’ option, and click on ‘set’ 
3. 3ds Max will now convert your interface to your chosen option. It may take some getting use to the ‘new’ icons, but this will certainly benefit you in the long run.
